The views across the valley from this hillside location are wonderful, and the gardens are beautifully designed and well tended. Here you'll easily forget that you're just 15 minutes from San José. Set amidst the coffee farms of Santo Domingo de Heredia, the hotel has extensive areas dominated by tall trees and brightened by plentiful flowers

Step back from the downtown hustle and bustle to that quiet place between the mountains where country roads and villages, fresh breezes, and never ending spring seasons (average temperature 70ºF) invigorate and renew. Set among 10 acres of lush gardens, the unique and comfortable Hotel Bougainvillea is a place where guests can truly experience the world famous beauty of Costa Rica, just ten minutes from San José. Add to this a free, hourly shuttle service into San José and you have a perfect combination.

Rooms are large with two double beds, a sitting area and the full range of facilities. Each has a balcony offering marvelous views of the mountains one one side and the San José skyline on the other. Each of the eighty-three rooms has twin double beds, tub or shower, and a separate seating area. There are also five Junior Suites and six rooms for disabled people. The furniture is especially made of Costa Rican hardwoods, and all rooms have cable TV and direct dial telephones.

Surrounded by coffee plantations and citrus orchards, the lush gardens provide an enticing setting for jogging through winding trails, tennis, or relaxation by the swimming pool. Original paintings and sculptures from among Costa Rica's leading artists commissioned for the Hotel Bougainvillea adorn the hotel.

Massive beam ceilings, wood paneling and a fireplace give the hotel bar the intimate feeling of a country inn. Our gourmet restaurant features international cuisine served elegantly on fine linen, imported bone china, crystal stemware and fresh flowers on every table. Every detail of the hotel and restaurant operation is personally supervised by owner Hans van der Wielen, who brought his extensive European experience with him when he moved to Costa Rica in 1961.
